Born out of a visit to Japan, the ERDEM Pre-Spring 2017 collection interprets the cross-cultural exchange between East and West of the 1930s. The army elements of Madama Butterfly inspire the collection’s take on militaria and the men’s uniform, morphed with an idea of the traditional Japanese wardrobe. Lightness characterises the collection in diaphanous tulle laces, graphic and scalloped guipures, and swirly Japanese motifs in print fil coupés for movement. Seersucker establishes a sense of lightweight met by relaxed cuts – sometimes with hints to the kimono – and motifs like the Koi print. The notion of relaxed opulence is epitomised in jewelled ballerina flats in velvet, mules and loafers, or in a strappy sandal in suede or printed ottoman.
