AUGUSTIN PETRONIO

If someone erased every piece you’ve ever created overnight, but left you all your knowledge, would you remake the same body of work or begin an entirely different life as an artist? Why?

I would start fresh. What I enjoy most about designing is clearing the worktable to explore uncharted techniques or materials. The enthusiasm of starting over with infinite possibilities is what drives me. It wouldn’t mean abandoning design altogether, as my heart will always belong to fashion.

Which creative rule do you believe deserves to be broken more often, and why do so many people still follow it?

It has always been hard for me to associate creativity with a strict methodology. Reading books about creativity, like The Artist’s Way or similar guides, feels like they map out a single path and offer tools that end up homogenizing creative processes, which I don’t see as a positive thing. My processes always come from leisure, reading, play, novelty, talking with people, taking photos on the street, or eating at a new spot. I’ve always struggled to sit down with a manual to design. Usually, my pencil and paper are just there to note down or sketch ideas that pop up in those unexpected moments.

If your work could have a private conversation with the work of any artist in history, whose would you choose, and what do you imagine they would say to each other?

My answer might sound almost cliché, but Alexander McQueen completely shifted my perception of the world and fashion. When I was young, I used to hide to look up his designs on fashion blogs; McQueen helped me reconcile with that artistic side of myself that I used to suppress or hide. Although our design visions are aesthetically entirely different, his approach pulled fashion away from superficiality for me and allowed me to understand it on a much deeper level. I think the dialogue between his work and mine would be fascinating precisely because we operate from such distinct aesthetic viewpoints.

What idea have you spent years trying to express but still feel you’ve never fully captured?

The idea of truly living as an artist: making a living by expressing myself and creating transcendent pieces that genuinely transform people.

If your creativity had a villain, who or what would it be?

I picture these creative villains like Dementors: intrusive thoughts that suck away the optimism that accompanies the creative process.

What’s the most beautiful failure you’ve ever made?

Every mistake along my journey has been beautiful, no matter how hard or painful it was. Finishing a creative process and looking back at it through a lens of painful reflection is essential to keep growing from a more honest and sincere place with oneself. I haven’t gone through a creative process without feeling it was a failure in some aspect, whether on a human, productive, or consequential level. Failing is also learning firsthand.

What would make you destroy one of your own works instead of letting the world see it?

Falling out of love with my own piece, no longer recognizing myself in it.

Which emotion do you think is disappearing from contemporary art?

I think there is a lack of subversive joy: fun as a form of resistance. Not from a place of fear and stillness, but from movement and optimism. That is how I feel about it.

If your work could only exist in one place—a gallery, a forest, a subway station, someone’s living room, or nowhere at all—where would it belong?

It would belong to the streets, to the performativity of life, the passerby’s surprise when encountering the unexpected.
