How would you describe the aesthetics of your brand?
Albarella represents the process of self-discovery and self-affirmation in a society that restricts queer identity in a series of stereotypes. The balance between feminine and masculine is conveyed in a series of garments that combine female sensuality with male sexuality.
What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work?
Currently, I’m researching male vanity and homoerotic photography from the work of Bob Mizer, Robert Mapplethorp, and Dian Hanson. These strong queer narratives are hugely inspiring to me. I try to share similar messages through the material of my work.
What have been your weirdest and wildest sources of inspiration for your brand and design directions?
Making fetish elements more mainstream and the shock element of it all has been a big source of inspiration. It’s a means of expressing rebellion from conservative social rules. My upbringing in rural Southern Italy, where traditional family values were imposed, has inspired me to create my latest collection “HUNTY”. It is based on that rejection. Being provocative with my designs is my way of mocking the oppression I experienced at a young age.
How would you describe your creative process?
After I’ve decided on the creative concept of a collection, I start imagining the shapes and silhouettes that could convey the concept. Then, I begin researching fabrics and materials before draping them onto a mannequin to bring the concept to life. The messages behind my work are so personal, which makes the journey a very intimate process.
Define what fashion means to you.
Fashion is expression and community. Fashion is a way of connecting with others, creating a sense of belonging, and forming communities with shared interests and aesthetics. Fashion is a powerful form of non-verbal communication that allows individuals to express themselves.
What is one of your biggest dreams that you have yet to fulfill?
Dressing Lil Nas X is a huge dream of mine. I’ve always been inspired by unapologetic queer people who use their platform to advocate for change and challenge society. This is exactly what I’m trying to do with Albarella and why I’d love to see them together.
