His unique approach has cultivated a sanctuary for artists seeking unwavering dedication and customized representation. As the driving force behind THE VISIONARIES, this 20-year veteran has sculpted a legacy in European and American fashion markets, merging his personal flair with boundless creativity to foster a new wave of industry trailblazers across the globe.
What inspired you to create THE VISIONARIES creative artist management agency, and how has it evolved since its inception?
The motivation behind starting my own business in Los Angeles, after working at a leading agency in London, was my belief that a unique business model is the key to unlocking the most beneficial, productive, rewarding, inspiring, and progressive ways of working for both artists and agencies. I was curious to explore the impact of a more tailored curated roster and discovered that it enables the roadmapping of careers in a very bespoke way. The agency has evolved from representing artists in the U.S. to Sydney and London, to creatives knocking on our door to get on our books. This gratefully puts us in the position of being able to handpick and represent artists who are as visionary individually as we are collectively as an agency. We’re all in, never doing anything by halves, yet with a human-first approach. Vernon François, the visionary hairdresser we represent, says, “Go where you are loved,” and this is what THE VISIONARIES is all about.
Can you share a specific project or collaboration that truly embodies the essence of THE VISIONARIES’ approach to creativity and innovation?
Creativity and innovation are our hallmarks, so it’s hard to pick just one project or collaboration. However, Alex Babsky being celebrated as a transformative artist at Variety + Armani Beauty’s Makeup Artistry Dinner, and his work with Florence Pugh, who is the face of Valentino Beauty are recent highlights. Others include hairstylist Stephen Beaver’s magazine covers with Penelope Cruz, Cate Blanchett, and Claudia Schiffer; Sarah Uslan’s makeup for Olivia Coleman’s Oscar win; Sam Fine’s hairstyling for Cynthia Erivo at the Met Gala; Shalev Lavan’s fashion styling for Shay Mitchell as the face of Maybelline; Virginie Pineda’s hairstyling for Avril Lavigne. Also, Vernon François’ hairstyling for Amandla Stenberg for the Star Wars series launch of The Acolyte on Disney+ and his stunning hair art for Prime Video which graced global billboards and was exhibited at Art Basel in Miami. There are many more projects in editorial, advertising, and brand collaborations across the fashion, beauty, music, television, and film industries. Each one embodies THE VISIONARIES’ essence. We are renowned for our exceptional attention to detail, expertly matching the right creative artist with the right client brief, while maintaining an international reach that retains a personal touch.
What has been the most defining moment of your career as a trailblazer across the worlds of fashion, beauty, entertainment, and celebrity?
Relocating from London to L.A. to set up THE VISIONARIES on my own in a foreign country was a significant accomplishment. Given my global network and the industry’s shift towards Hollywood, I recognized it was the right time for this bold move. Fast forward a few years, and we were at The Hollywood Beauty Awards alongside Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Viola Davis, and Lionel Richie, with one of our artists Vernon François, a winner in his category who dedicated most of his speech to our working relationship. That hit hard, in such a good way! At the end of the day, with every contract that’s signed, every award that’s won, it’s a collection of moments that define trailblazing careers.
For me, success is not about power or material gains. Success is in regularly asking myself, are we creating a nurturing haven that enables creativity to flourish? We succeed when our artists are working, creatively satisfied, and financially rewarded at the end of every month.
How do you stay motivated and creative in an industry that is constantly evolving and changing?
It’s very easy for me to stay motivated and creative by just looking at the calibre of work we’re producing daily with our next-level artistic talent. Plus, we have the crème de la crème of photographers, models, celebrities, and global brand partners. For years and years, I would live and breathe the job 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Now, I also prioritize switching off and having some downtime to recharge, refresh, and enhance my mental focus, which every creative person needs to do. Leading a healthy lifestyle, eating well, taking hydration seriously, daily workouts, and enjoying being outdoors all play massive parts. The L.A. sunshine makes it easy and that is never taken for granted.
How do you define success in an industry that is constantly evolving, and how do you ensure that THE VISIONARIES stays ahead of the curve?
For me, success is not about power or material gains. Success is in regularly asking myself, are we creating a nurturing haven that enables creativity to flourish? We succeed when our artists are working, creatively satisfied, and financially rewarded at the end of every month. THE VISIONARIES stays ahead of the curve by avoiding a corporate-led mindset. We remain selective, collaborating with both highly successful artists and emerging talent who are on their own paths to success.
What challenges have you faced in managing creative artists internationally, and how have you overcome them?
The biggest challenge I face is that there is only one of me! No one can work 24/7 so I expanded my team with the most talented people in all the right places. THE VISIONARIES is now structured in a way where our agency never sleeps, with people working on the ground in every time zone in which we work. We collaborate effectively and I remain actively involved in all areas. I am forever grateful for our dedicated team.
As someone who champions creativity and talent, what principles guide your selection of artists to represent?
Talent and integrity are our guiding principles when selecting artists to represent. We’re thinking about whether the artists can be client friendly, do they have the mannerisms, the work ethic, the personality, the kindness and respect that everyone’s going to be looking for. Another vital principle is vision. We want to work with creative individuals who are driven to take advantage of all the opportunities that arise.
How do you see the future of your industry evolving, and what role do you envision THE VISIONARIES playing in this transformation?
We’re involved in all sectors of the creative artist management industry, including fashion, beauty, celebrity, lifestyle, film, television, art, corporate, and sports. In terms of how it is evolving, social media has been a complete game changer. Social communication has essentially become its own currency and a business tool that doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. If anything, I’m sure something new will come along that will enhance this progressive way of doing business. Playing a part in the industry’s constant evolution requires THE VISIONARIES to be agile and nimble, so that we can navigate whatever might come our way and embrace the change along the way.
In what ways do you see THE VISIONARIES evolving in the future, and how will you continue to push boundaries in the realms of hair, makeup, and fashion styling?
We will continue to work with who we consider to be the best artists in the industry, investing time, energy, devotion, and commitment to realizing their full potential, ambitions, and goals. This will be achieved through careful focus and being consistently accessible on a global basis. We’re fortunate that artists from around the world, including the U.S., the U.K., Europe, and Australia, approach us for representation. Operating in multiple territories gives our creative roster and client partners continuity and consistency, making professional lives easier with one company, one way of doing things, one source of schedules, relationships, and a solid infrastructure. THE VISIONARIES will continue to push boundaries across hair, makeup, and fashion styling by identifying and collaborating with multi-generations of visionary creatives. We want partners at the forefront of each of these creative areas who can disrupt, challenge, push boundaries, and change narratives—and at the same time, those who can educate, inspire, and instill confidence in consumers.
