Words by Delaney Willet

Saudi Arabian born women’s rights activist Rawan Abdullah Abu Zaid, globally known as Model Roz, pummels the boundaries of culture, beauty, and success, all while dripping in Bulgari and sporting her steepest pumps. The 35-year-old Leo skillfully balances her respect for traditional roots with a fierce pursuit of visibility in the fashion world, a career once deemed impossible for a Saudi woman due to the country’s restrictive laws on women and their expression of femininity. Committed to building her brand on her own terms, Model Roz made the bold decision to shed her traditional hijab and abaya, confidently facing the camera and never looking back.
While her career has soared over the past decade since moving to Los Angeles, Model Roz has recently reconnected with her roots in Dubai, where she has added “reality star” to her list of occupations. On the latest season of Netflix’s reality show Dubai Bling, she made her debut as a special guest star, opening up about her successes and personal setbacks. This allowed her 15.2 million fans to see a more vulnerable side of her, beyond the glamorous magazine covers and red carpet appearances. However, it is her activism and advocacy that have played a significant role in her success as an entrepreneur. Model Roz is seen as a symbol of empowerment for Muslim women, providing inspiration for others with similar ambitions, regardless of their age or location.
In addition to building her own brand, the model has devoted herself to paving the way for women in difficult environments, stirring hope and confidence in those who may feel lost. While the runways and recognition are a rewarding result, striding into the spotlight has given Model Roz the platform she has always wanted: one that elevates women to achieve and believe in better for themselves, right alongside her.

Take us back to the beginning. In what ways did your upbringing prepare you for your career and success?

Growing up in Saudi Arabia, I was always surrounded by strong, ambitious women within my family, even in a culture that traditionally had its limitations. My upbringing fostered resilience, adaptability, and a belief that I could create my own path, no matter the obstacles. My curiosity for fashion and beauty started early, and I knew I wanted to express myself in a way that broke barriers while still honoring my roots.

You left Saudi Arabia and moved to the states to pursue your dreams. How  was this transition  and what were some of your most challenging moments?

Moving to the U.S. was both exhilarating and hard. It was my first step into independence, where I had to prove myself in an industry that was still evolving in our region. Some of the hardest moments were navigating cultural expectations while still pushing boundaries, especially as a Saudi woman pursuing a public career. There were moments of doubt and times when I felt like I had to fight harder to be taken seriously, but every challenge shaped me into who I am today.

What is your advice for individuals who feel marginalized by their realities?

My biggest advice is to never let anyone define your limits for you. If you feel like your reality is restricting, use that as fuel to create your own opportunities. I’ve learned that courage isn’t about being fearless, but about moving forward regardless of the fear. Also, never underestimate the power of authenticity. The more you embrace who you truly are, the more the world makes space for you.

Your journey has been quite unique, particularly when reflecting on your roots. Have you always aimed for a career like the one you have now?

I’ve always had a clear vision that I was going to be a superstar and I worked hard to turn that vision into reality. I was always passionate about fashion, beauty, and making a mark in history to create a lasting difference. I knew I wanted to make a global impact, and every milestone I achieve motivates me to push further, but I never feel like it’s enough. I’m constantly striving to become a better version of myself, always setting new goals and working harder to reach them.

How  was your experience  with  reality  television? Would you engage in a similar process again?

Being on a reality show was a great experience because it allowed me to be completely myself without faking anything to seek attention. Staying true to who I am was one of the most powerful and successful things I’ve done. The audience connected with me because of my authenticity. Opening up about my private life wasn’t always easy, but it’s what truly touched people’s hearts and created a deeper connection with them.

You’ve established yourself as a staple in the international fashion scene. Tell us about any memorable experiences that you cherish.

Fashion Week is always a whirlwind, filled with unforgettable moments every season! I wouldn’t say there’s just one particular story to tell. Every experience, whether it’s challenging or exciting, becomes an amazing memory. One of my favorite parts is sharing the “get ready with me” moments with my followers. During that time, I go through a rollercoaster of emotions. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry, and sometimes I’m incredibly stressed, but sharing that side of my journey with my audience means so much to me. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of stepping out at a show and hearing the paparazzi call my name. It makes me proud, especially as the first Saudi woman to reach this level. In those moments, I think back to the younger version of myself, the girl who once said, “I’m going to be a superstar someday,” and I feel grateful to be living that dream.

What’s next for you? Are there other spaces or industries you would like to explore?

I’m always looking for ways to evolve and explore new opportunities, but I don’t usually like to reveal too much about my next steps. I believe actions speak louder than words. What I can say is that I’m open to exciting possibilities, whether it’s launching my own reality show, more acting, or even exploring music. Beauty has always been a passion of mine and I’d love to create something meaningful in that space. Maybe it will be through my own brand or an impactful collaboration. I’m also deeply interested in philanthropy, particularly initiatives that empower women in creative industries. That’s something I’m committed to building on in the future. And yes, acting has become a new love of mine. You’ll definitely see me pursuing more opportunities in Hollywood. So stay tuned, there’s a lot more to come!
