THE STRAPPING SYMBOL OF NOW
Young Austrian-born Marina Hoermanseder isdefining a moment. She’s a rare breed of designer – one who can develop whimsical, haute-couture collections for runway and simultaneously have a coveted commercial presence. Known for her signature strap and buckle, Marina’s structured leatherwork is both structured and feminine. This latest collection pulls attention towards the exaggeration of the waistline with oversized belts, pops of neon, and a fantastical nod to a nesting doll. For a designer with such a cult following, this looks exactly like the season’s needed uniform.
BASIC: In your opinion, how does clothing speak to heritage and identity?
The way you dress shows not only your personal style, but your true identity and heritage. People with a certain background often dress in a certain way. I think it is very beautiful to see how people show their identity and heritage with their clothes.
BASIC: Where have you traveled that has inspired yourdesigns, and how can we see it reflected?
I’ve been to a lot of places all around the world, from Indonesia to London – you name it! As a designer, everything you see, hear, taste and feel inspires your designs in one way or another. That being said, I cannot choose one specific place. I’d say all my travels inspired me and my designs.
BASIC: Would you rather swim with the dolphins or dive with the sharks?
Most people would guess I’d choose swimming with dolphins, but I’d actually dive with the sharks. I love to grow as a person and stepping out of my comfort zone
is one way to do so. Since sharks are pretty scary (obviously), they are definitely out of my comfort zone.
I believe that one has to experience both in life. I think if you are ready to dive with sharks, you’ll have then an opportunity to swim with anyone you want.
BASIC: What is your ideal way of traveling and why?
The perfect mix of adventure and relaxation is most important to me. I don’t want to have a time table full of activities, but also don’t want to get bored lying on the beach 24/7.
BASIC: What classic film would you love to see made with your designs?
I definitely want to see a Bond Girl wearing my designs one day! Whether in a new movie or a remade version of a classic Bond.
BASIC: Which country’s street style is most appealing?
During my time in London, I learned to appreciate the British street style and still love to keep up with their latest ideas and trends.everything you see, hear, taste and feel inspires your designs in one way or another. That being said, I cannot choose one specific place. I’d say all my travels inspired me and my designs.
BASIC: If you could hold a fashion show on any national monument or world wonder, what would you choose?
That’s one interesting question…I think the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus is probably the most appealing, and it would look stunning with my designs walking around! Also the Great Wall of China as some kind of “never ending catwalk” would be fun, right? 😉
