Maison Tóukkani: The Geometry of New York

The Manhattan

For Maison Tóukkani, New York is less a destination than a pattern. In the brand’s latest collection, New York Pulse, the city’s streets, intersections, and shifting densities are translated into hand-knotted rugs that bridge contemporary urbanism with centuries-old Moroccan craftsmanship.

Staten Island

Developed following founder Khalida Toukkani’s extended engagement with New York during the Maison’s expansion into North America, the collection looks beyond recognizable landmarks. Instead, it focuses on the city’s underlying structure—the orthogonal rhythm of Manhattan’s grid, the tension between architecture and landscape, and the visual cadence created where order meets unpredictability.

The Brooklyn

These observations are transformed through Moroccan hand-knotting traditions, with intersections becoming geometric motifs and variations in pile height echoing the changing density of the skyline. As light moves across each surface, subtle topographies emerge and recede, creating a dynamic relationship between material and space. Pieces within the collection carry names tied to the city itself, including ManhattanBrooklynStaten Island, and Soho.

Hand-knotted in Morocco using Maison Tóukkani’s signature natural wool, each rug is produced in collaboration with women artisans in the Middle Atlas Mountains. The result is a dialogue between place and process—where one of the world’s most recognizable urban landscapes is interpreted through a craft tradition shaped over centuries.

Presented at ICFF New York 2025, New York Pulse marks Maison Tóukkani’s most geographically inspired collection to date. Rather than depicting New York directly, it captures its rhythm, translating the language of the city into texture, geometry, and form.
