LUCIO CARVALHO

@luciocarvalhoart

What is the aesthetic behind your vision?
My work is based on memories and the fragile mechanisms we deploy to protect ourselves. Often times, we’re aware that the sense of safety or wellbeing is just an illusion, but it helps us carry on.

Talk to us about your artist statement.
My art protects my world.

What is your most vivid childhood memory?
Me as a child protecting myself under the dining table on the farm where I was raised. I was drawing and observing a china cabinet with glass. I could see past the china to the mirrors in the background reflecting the world around me. In the reflections of the mirrors, people, pictures, cups, and teapots were mixed in a single image. The objects housed in the glass shelving were as fragile as the glass that protected them.

Which book or novel would best visualize your art?
A book about Caravaggio or Derek Jarman’s film about the artist. Its intense play of light, shadow, and drama transport me to my childhood on the farm and the kerosene lighting that enveloped it.

Tell us about your most vivid dream?
To battle and overcome difficulties, ultimately reaching a technical and emotional understanding that will enable me to execute the works I always dreamed of.
