Alex Roby: Form Without Correction

Alex Roby approaches ceramics with an insistence on honesty. Clay is handled without cosmetic correction—what happens in the making is allowed to remain, visible in the final piece. Rather than refining away irregularities, Roby treats them as part of the work’s integrity.

Her practice centers on vessels and objects defined by weight, structure, and a straightforward approach to form. Hand-built and wheel-thrown techniques coexist in her catalog, alongside high-heat and atmospheric firing processes that introduce variation beyond the artist’s full control. The flame becomes a quiet collaborator, altering each surface into something singular and unrepeatable.

Inspired by the textures and tones of the natural world, Roby’s vessels explore the coexistence of strength and fragility. Surfaces often remain raw, marked by collected materials—rocks, shells, wood—or shaped by intentional and natural breakage. The resulting forms feel unearthed and ancient, carrying a sense of the wild rather than the decorative.

Each piece holds its own narrative, shaped by process rather than polish. Through restraint and material truth, Roby creates objects that feel both newly formed and timeless—grounded works that elevate space through presence rather than perfection.
