Ash Street Collective: Stories Shaped by the Sea

For Ashley, the ocean has never been simply a source of inspiration. Through Ash Street Collective, the New Zealand designer, now based in Australia, draws from her Samoan heritage, a lifetime spent around coastlines, and memories collected through travel to create jewelry that carries a sense of place with it.

Those influences take physical form in pieces shaped by the raw, untamed character of the sea. At the center of the work are Australian opals, treated not simply as decoration but as a material for storytelling. Their shifting color and natural individuality become part of jewelry designed to feel discovered rather than manufactured—almost like keepsakes pulled from another world.

Ashley’s practice is also informed by a life beyond design. Her background in child safety and disability advocacy keeps human connection at the center of her work, while jewelry offers another way to translate emotion and experience into something tangible. The result is a practice that feels deeply personal without losing its sense of mystery.

Earth-hewn textures, precious materials, and oceanic references come together in pieces that sit somewhere between adornment and wearable art. Rather than polishing away the irregularities of the natural world, Ash Street Collective embraces them, creating jewelry for those who see what they wear as an extension of their own story.
