Empowering individuals to express themselves with uninhibited creativity, the OpenAI research and development company has innovated a new artificial intelligence system that can produce realistic images and art from a description in our natural language. The system is called DALL·E 2 and while AI typically outperforms the abilities of humans, this endeavor necessitates considerable human involvement.

Having learned the connection between images and the text used to describe them, DALL·E 2 has the capability to form graphic edits to existing images based upon standard language captions, like “an astronaut riding a horse in space” or “a painting of a cat sitting in a field of flowers in the style of Andy Warhol”. Creating a multitude of variations inspired by an original image or adding and removing elements, DALL·E 2 is also cognizant of shadows, reflections, and textures. This process is called “diffusion,” which begins with a pattern of random dots and gradually modifies that pattern towards an image when it recognizes specific aspects of that image.

Many fear that AI will soon replace human artists, but DALL·E 2 is a tool we can use to our advantage, and according to OpenAI, it is a system that has the potential to benefit all of humanity.
