From Van Cleef to His Own Vision: The World of Donald Huber

For nearly two decades, Donald Huber has been guided by a singular vision: creating fine jewelry inspired by the sculptural rhythms of the ocean and the enduring beauty of nature. The movement of waves, the organic forms of shells and leaves, and the ever-shifting hues of the sky over water are recurring influences that shape his distinctive aesthetic—fluid, elegant, and timeless.

A Florida native, Huber’s fascination with gemstones began in childhood, when he first started collecting stones and developing an appreciation for fine luxury. That passion led him to New York City, where he studied product development at Parsons School of Design. He later honed his craft as a lead designer, creating exquisite fine jewelry for prestigious houses, including Van Cleef & Arpels and The Vivid Collection.

In 2002, Huber co-founded Donald Huber New York with his sister, Stacy Huber, establishing a brand defined by exceptional craftsmanship and refined artistry. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted by gifted artisans in New York City, reflecting a commitment to quality, detail, and enduring beauty.

Constantly inspired by travel, nature, and personal connection, Huber continues to explore the world in search of new influences while maintaining close relationships with collectors through select Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue locations nationwide. His work embodies a balance of artistry and sophistication—jewelry designed to feel both effortless and extraordinary.

Being a native Floridian, I grew up spending time at the beach—swimming in the ocean, sailing, and boating on the open sea. The movement of the water endlessly inspires me, its shifting colors in different weather, and the creatures that live both below and above its surface. The sea carries a sense of rhythm and power that feels alive, and that energy naturally finds its way into my work.

At Van Cleef & Arpels, I learned the profound importance of quality and attention to detail. Even in the simplest pieces, subtle refinements make an enormous difference. That standard has stayed with me.

When I launched my own brand, I didn’t feel compelled to break rules as much as to bring production closer to myself. We make everything here in New York City so that I can remain hands-on at every step of the process. That proximity allows for a level of care and precision that defines our work.

I approach each piece more like a sculptor. Whether I am working with a large gemstone or one of our ancient coins, I build the design from the ground up—adding, refining, and shaping until the stone becomes the undeniable focal point. The form evolves through structure and balance.

Although it has been many years since I worked as a bench jeweler, that experience gives me a deep understanding of what it takes to create fine jewelry. I collaborate very closely with our craftspeople, especially on one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces.

Because I’m involved in every aspect of creation, the process feels truly collaborative. Often, the artisans bring technical insight or subtle structural improvements that elevate the final result beyond the initial concept.

Timelessness once meant creating something that would stand the test of time—something durable enough to be passed down through generations.

Today, in this fast-paced, technology-driven world, timelessness feels more personal. It means a client continues to love and wear a piece throughout their lifetime. Longevity is still important—but emotional connection is what truly defines timelessness.

Paris has been that place for me lately. I work with gem dealers there who consistently source extraordinary materials. Beyond that, I am deeply influenced by the city’s art, culture, and the sense of formality in daily life—something that feels increasingly rare in the United States.

I hope it conveys a sense of happiness—even if only for a fleeting moment in the era we live in. Life is short, and there should always be room for joy in art.
