ZHAOYI YU – MODERN COUTURE, IMAGINED

Emotionally charged and steeped in heritage, Zhaoyi Yu is emerging as one of modern couture’s most compelling new voices. Through vulnerable storytelling and ethereal craftsmanship, the London-based designer invites us into a dreamlike world where fashion becomes fantasy — deeply personal, poetic, and unapologetically expressive.

Self-described as modern couture, Yu’s work merges experimental techniques with the traditions of Chinese craftsmanship, a heartfelt homage to his upbringing. His debut collection at London Fashion Week 2024 showcased this philosophy with striking clarity, most notably through the intricate inlay of mother of pearl into textiles — a technique traditionally reserved for decorative arts, transformed into wearable form. The result was couture that felt both innovative and reverent, blurring the boundaries between fashion, art, and cultural memory.

Fresh off completing his MA at the London College of Fashion, Yu’s debut immediately captured the attention of VogueElle, and 10 Magazine, marking a confident and promising beginning for his eponymous label. Yet beyond technical mastery, it is Yu’s emotional honesty that sets his work apart — garments designed not just to be worn, but to be felt.

Now in the midst of developing his second collection for Spring/Summer 2026, Zhaoyi Yu continues to explore themes of fantasy, identity, and neurodivergence, while imagining future collaborations that expand his dreamscape even further. With each collection, Yu proves that couture can still be intimate, vulnerable, and alive — a space where imagination and heritage meet.
